ICOMAA CANADA

The Canadian Branch of the Ibadan College of Medicine Alumni Association was incorporated in Canada in 2020 as a non-profit tax-exempt organization.

Members include graduates in Biochemistry, Dentistry, Human Nutrition, Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Physiology, and Physiotherapy; as well as postgraduate degree holders in the medical sciences.

In 2017 a group of alumni were approached by Dr. Olamitoye Abib the President of ICOMAA worldwide to help launch a branch of the association in Canada.

Dr. Oluyomi Sobowale elected as the founding President and there were seven foundation members at the 1st meeting. They were tasked with the mission of engaging fellow alumni in Canada to assist in  “Giving Back to a Center of Excellence”.

The Medical school was founded in 1948 with 14 students, as the University College at Ibadan, an external college of the University of London. In 1962, two years after Nigeria’s independence, the University College became the University of Ibadan with independence from the University of London.

As the oldest and most prestigious medical school in sub-Saharan Africa, the University Of Ibadan College Of Medicine has been a center of excellence in learning for seven decades; it has played a pivotal role in furthering clinical medical research in Africa and celebrates its 70th anniversary this year in 2018.
